ResumoMagnetic decreases (MDs) are isolated regions in interplanetary space (and even into the Earth's magnetosphere) where the magnitude of the magnetic ¯eld drops to few tenths, or less, of its ambient values. The magnetic pressure decreases are supplanted by plasma thermal pressure increases so that the entire structure is generally in pressure balance. Particles detected within MDs are found to be preferentially heated perpendicular to B0. Nowadays, it is believed that most MDs are associated with the phase steepened edges of nonlinear Alfv¶en waves, due to diamagnetic e®ects, but this theory can not explain the whole set of MDs observed. Our intent in this paper is to investigate perpendicular non-resonant particle di®usion due to their interactions with MDs at large heliospheric latitudes. To do such a study, we start from analytical distribution functions obtained for an ensemble of Ulysses observed MDs (magnetometer data). The distribution functions are dependent on the ratio between the values of the magnetic ¯eld inside the MD and around it, and on the space dimension of the MD. These distribution functions are them statistically represented by points, obtained using Monte Carlo method. The particle di®usion is analyzed using a theoretical model presented by Tsurutani et al. (Nonlinear Processes in Geophys., 6, 235, 1999). For the simulation, we let a particle with speci¯c energy interacts with an MD of a ¯eld decrease and thickness given by the selected random points on the distribution functions. This process can be continued until all particles have been scattered, reaching a scattered distribution for all particles.
